| Rainford Inter |
Starting line up of Ben in goal, defence made up of Jamie,Sean,James, with midfielders being Louis, Ethan and Ben Hughes getting a run further up the field.
KICK OFF AT 10.50. Rainhill started well winning 2 throw ins, and within a minute Louis had a shot that was saved. Sean made a good tackle and they had a long range shot which didnt trouble Ben in goal. We won a corner shortly after but everyone stood still after Ethan crossed it in.
3 minutes into the game and Ethan had a shot that went over the bar, and a minute later a nice passing move involved Louis playing the ball to Ben who in turn played it to Jamie and their goalie saved the ball on the line. Jamie then dribbled the ball well at the back and a pass to Louis on the right saw him play the ball to Ben H who shot just wide. Louis again went down the right, won a tackle and crossed the ball into their box, and this good chance went begging as the ball just ran behind Ethan who had moved forward.
The home team had a corner on 8 minutes which was cleared well by Sean, but it was put back into our box and ran out for a goal kick. Ben in goal gave the ball a proper boot from the goalkick, which led to Ethan taking an early shot, so much so that it caught Ben H who couldnt get out of the way quick enough. A let off for the home team. The momentum was with Rainhill, and James made a good tackle on the right and a minute later Ethan had a shot from the edge of the box on the left which found its way past their goalie! 0-1 to Rainhill.
The home team responded by having a shot almost immediately from the kick off and Ben saved well. There was an unusual sense of calm permeating the touchline for the away supporters, which in turn may have rubbed off on the team, because suddenly the home team started to get a foothold in the game.
Sean cleared well at the back again and Rainhill won a corner. Ethan took this on the left and his usual inswinger just missed the far post.
Ethan was replaced with Jack coming on in midfield. The home team then had a shot that was saved well by Ben and from the resulting corner there was a goal line scramble which was finally cleared by Ben to Jack who went down the right. Patrick replaced James at the back, and on the 17th minute mark Jamie made a good tackle and we moved down the right. A throw in was taken and Louis headed it to Ben H whose shot was saved by their goalie. Patrick made the first of a number of good tackles, with Sean also breaking up an attack. Some good defending saw Jamie clear well, and just before half time, Patrick took a ball to the face having moved in to clear the threat. Credit to Patrick as he attempted to clear and he went off to get his eye checked.
The second half commenced at 11.15 with Rainhill leading 0-1. There was a change of goalie with Nick taking up position in goal with Ben becoming the sub. Louis put in a good tackle on the right and Sean played a good ball forward to Jamie who went into their box. The ball was cleared and Patrick who had come back on ran the ball out. Sean headed clear and Louis ran the ball down to win a corner. 2 minutes in the second half saw Jamie break down the left. The ball ran out and the resulting throw in saw a Rainford player take a throw-in , which rather unconventionally saw him throw it to himself. Patrick put in a brave tackle shortly afterwards, but the home team had a shot that was saved well by Nick. Louis then found himself defending with the rest of the team and as there was no one else up field he ended up dribbling past 3 players to get the ball clear. Patrick at the back collected the ball from a goalkick and back heeled it nicely to Ethan who cleared it for a throw. Louis passed the ball forward to James and the home team cleared it eventually getting a corner. Patrick got in the way of the corner and Louis played it to James and we broke. Ethan made a good tackle on the half way line, and the ball broke forward with Ethan having a good shot saved. Sean was replaced at the back with Ben coming on. Jack made a break down the left and the home team responded by attacking out goal with first Ethan clearing then Nick making a save. Fifteen minutes into the second half saw the home team score an equaliser from a shot from the right. 1-1!.
Ben made a good clearance, but the home team were looking more likely to score. 2 minutes later, another ball was played forward by Rainford, which left just one Rainhill defender at the back facing 3 attackers. Not the best of odds, and sadly BetFred couldnt offer odds aginst preventing a goal from such a position of disadvantage! 2-1 to the home team. The earlier sense of calm from the away supporters was suddenly a distant memory. The lads rallied with Louis taking on 3 players which led to Jack having a shot that just went wide. They broke again with Sean putting in a good tackle, and from the resultant corner Louis headed it out and then cleared. Jack put in a good challenge, and once again Sean found himself the only defender at the back, up against 3 attackers as they went forward again. The odds were not good again but Sean made a telling tackle and the ball was played to Ethan who went past a defender and broke down the right. The decision to sqaure the ball was absolutely the right thing to do. Their goalkeeper was beaten and as James lunged forward, the ball and James moved in slow motion toward each other. The ball just evaded James' attempt to turn it in as he slide across the grass-it must have been a stud width away from being turned in. This dramatic effort was the last of the match with the home team winning 2-1.
