Following the disappointment of defeat at the weekend were still in search of a win over today’s opponents in order to secure the league title. With a potential banana skin of a final league game against a resurgent Culcheth side in search of league survival, today was really a must win game, and Alan was keen for the lads to play this like it was a cup final.
Garswood had given us a tough time in the middle of the field in the last game, and this was going to be a tough one, but we took the lead when the Garswood keeper lost the ball under pressure from Jack Ball inside the box, and Harry was on hand to slot home the loose ball.
Garswood equalised soon afterwards when they broke through down the right and it was an accurate finish from the Garswood lad from an acute angle. But we were getting our passes together, and causing problems for them down both wings. Alex put us 2-1 ahead with a great strike from just inside the box after Will Meredith had squared the ball to him.
There was always a risk of a Garswood break, but Edi did a great job of marking the big number 15 in midfield. Another goalkeeping error let Will Meredith in for his first of his goals when he tapped in from close range. Alex went on to add his second of the game, and was unlucky not to get a hat trick when headed just over from a Mike Painter free kick. Mez had a shot from out wide well saved by the Garswood keeper, but he put the finishing touch to the game when we broke away from a Garswood corner and he fired home from a Harry cross to make it 5-1 on the night.
A much better performance, and the Garswood coach said that we were a different team tonight.
Man of the match went to Edi for running his socks off to keep the big Garswood number 15 out of the game as much as possible.
Well done everyone. We’ve deserved to win the league title on the basis of our consistent form and massive goals difference. On the defensive side, only Penlake, the Premier league champions have conceded less goals than us in all 4 divisions.
